Project description

The objective of the project was to develop a multidisciplinary conceptual design for a new mixed-use (pedestrians and cyclists) footbridge over the Old City Moat in Wroclaw. The footbridge connects Komuny Paryskiej Street with the Sakwowy Bastion in the Przedmieście Oławskie district of Wrocław. The design was based on the guidelines provided by the Client, in-house analyses and pre-design research, supported by relevant technical consultations.

The design proposed a footbridge with a usable width of 4.0 m and a total length of approximately 60.5 m, designed as a two-span structure. The load-bearing structure consists of two steel box girders of variable height in a form of an arch, acting together with a composite reinforced concrete deck forming the bridge deck. At the abutment on the Podwale Street (east) side, bearings and an expansion joint are provided, while at the central pier and the abutment on the Promenada Staromiejska (west) side, the load-bearing structure is rigidly connected to the pier and abutment, respectively.

One of the leading design assumptions was to achieve a neutral and minimalist form, harmonising with the historic and park-like surroundings. The two-span configuration allows for the load-carrying structure to be positioned underneath the deck, thereby minimizing visual interference with the landscape of Wzgórze Partyzantów.
